What is kelp powder good for? Is kelp a superfood or something?
May 17, 2010 Categories: Superfood
I’m looking for some form of powder that i can begin including in my diet. Some type of powder with lots of antioxidants. Would kelp count? Or would chlorella be better?
Or anything else? Thanks
Oh i heard kelp is good for your skin somehow. I didn’t know you can only use it for a certain amount of time.
Answer :
Kelp is a good source of Iodine and has some Chlorophyll… but it is nowhere near the level of “superfood”. If you ate too much Kelp, you could get Iodine poisoning (an overdose of Iodine) and you wouldn’t get enough of any other nutrients to make it worth it. There is a tiny Chlorophyll in it, but if that’s what you’re looking for, I would just take some Alfalfa instead because that is one of the most abundant sources.
Chlorella would be a much superior superfood than Kelp for sure… it also has much safer levels of the various vitamins and minerals. Good luck and I hope I helped!
[edit]: In regards to another answer… yes, you CAN overdose on Kelp powder. Iodine is a mineral that can build up to toxic levels and people have been hospitalized for too much of it in their system (although the high blood pressure from Iodized salt is usually a larger issue). Too much of anything can be bad for you, even water.

Kelp is an underwater plant with a majestic form, deep green color and a high nutritional yield. Commonly referred to as “seaweed” this botanical beauty is not from the common “seaweed” but rather a different classification of plant entirely. Don’t use on a daily basis for more than 2 weeks at a time, taking a 2 week break before using again. Contains Iodine, Calcium, Iron, Potassium, Vitamin B1, B2, B12 and polysaccharides
Kelp contains a broad spectrum of naturally occurring vitamins, minerals and trace minerals. It is rich in naturally occurring iodine, especially important in thyroid function, hormone balance and fat metabolism. It is also an excellent detoxifier of xeno-estrogenic compounds (e.g., pesticides, synthetic hormones, toxic chemicals) to support healthy hormone balance. It is particularly beneficial with combined with botanical synergists, which contain a full spectrum of naturally occurring vitamins, especially B vitamins, minerals and trace minerals. Make sure you’re getting the highest grade possible. Kelp is particularly safe in comparison to synthetic-source iodine (which can cause toxic reactions). You can’t “overdose” on kelp powder. Most people don’t need much. I used kelp mixed dulse, sea lettuce, sea wrack, bladder wrack and Irish moss in a base of Noni, asparagus broccoli and fo ti tieng.
Kelp is wonderful!
Here’s an article that includes more information.

Kelp has calcium, trace minerals, vitamins and iodine and is really good for you if you have a sluggish thyroid. See my blog about all the benefits of Kelp. Look under herbs and women’s concerns. http://barbarasherbbasket.wordpress.com/
Kelp is more medicinal in nature as are many herbs. I would not take this everyday as a super food. Kelp is used as one of many ingredients in some super foods but it is in a small dose and combined with other nutrient rich herbs.
