Chia Seeds Health Benefits: 5 Things Your Momma Never Told You

September 12, 2010   Categories: Healthy Eating

Chia seeds’ health benefits are getting a lot of press these days. You might hear people throwing around the expressions “superfood” and “nature’s perfect food.” No single food all by itself can radically transform your health, so don’t take up all the hype! Nevertheless, if you’ve ingested chia seeds on a regular basis, the probability is that you’ve noticed some concrete health benefits.

But do you realize why chia seeds are so good for you? And do you recognize how to get the most from them? Here are five exciting things you didn’t know about chia seeds.

1. Chia seeds aren’t brand-new.

Chia was a tremendously vital crop in pre-Columbian Mexico, as coveted as corn and beans. Chia was included in tributes and levies among the Aztec peoples, and the health benefits were fully understood. So even though you might very well notice people this day dubbing chia a “new superfood,” it’s truly not new in the least.

2. Chia seeds have more health benefits than flax seeds.

This isn’t to claim that flax seeds aren’t good for you – they’re excellent! But chia is even better. Chia has up to 64% of the omega-3 fatty acid that safeguards your cardiovascular system. This is more than flax or hemp. Moreover, chia boasts a balanced 3:1 ratio of omega-3 to omega-6, the saint for correcting the imbalances present in the typical westerner’s diet.

3. You can drink chia seeds, as well!

Chia seeds’ health benefits aren’t restrained to solid foods. For a luscious and healthful drink, stir about 1/2 a teaspoon to 1 teaspoon of chia seeds into a glass of freshly-squeezed lemonade. Wait about ten minutes to give the chia seeds a chance to enlarge and become gooey. As you sip the beverage, relish the feeling of the gooey seeds against your tongue. You could also add chia seeds to any type of juice, plain water or a spritzer.

4. White and black chia seeds are equal in nutrition.

Which do you purchase – white or black? It’s merely a private preference, so don’t worry about it. If you look at black chia seeds carefully, you will perceive color variations ranging from black to brown and white. White chia is derived from white seeds that have been planted separately from the black chia seeds.

5. Chia seeds are overpriced at the grocery store.

Okay, you probably already know this. But you might have thought that chia seeds are expensive because they’re hard to grow or are rare. This is not the case. After all, chia seeds were the staple diet of the Aztecs and Mayans for thousands of years, remember? As chia seeds begin to become a more favourite part of our modern food regimen, perhaps we’ll notice the expense level out in grocery stores. Until that happy time, the ideal way to go shopping for chia seeds is on the web.

Chia seeds’ health benefits are enabling consumers to adopt a balanced diet and have a healthy lifestyle. Don’t get turned off by all the hype about chia. Try it for yourself and make an informed decision.

Speaking of chia, I tried this AMAZING new drink that uses chia seeds as the main ingredient. It’s called Mamma Chia, and I found it stumbling through Whole Foods last week. It has this really cool gel-like consistency, and has 4 great flavors (I have already tried them all). After hearing a lot about the health benefits of chia, I decided to try it, and now I am buying it by the case.

You MUST write about this product and get the word out. It is a San Diego small, local company.
