You dont see the Japenese up in arms over mercury. Americans are the only ones that freak out about stuff like that. If you like it, eat it.

Absolutely, sushi is quite healthful, even though it is raw fish and the relative mercury levels are not high. While Mercury exists in all seafood (it is naturally present in seawater) the risks are often overblown by the media. Sushi is very nutritious, and not a ‘risky’ food to eat.

Sushi is high in lean protein, low in carbs and fat, and what fat it does contain is the ‘good’ fat, Omega-3 fatty acids. These have been shown to help control blood sugar levels (in everyone, which is good for diabetics and those at risk), are necessary for fetal (and adult) brain and eye development, and may even delay or prevent Alzheimer’s. Omega-3s also improve one’s cholesterol profile, and have been shown to reverse heart disease.

As for the raw nature of sushi, all seafood (except tuna) is also required to be frozen to a very low temperature for a set length of time in order to kill parasites, which is an FDA regulation. This, coupled with the sanitary practices of reputable restaurants will mitigate much of the risk of sushi’s raw nature. Obviously if a restaurant is unsanitary, their sushi will not be, but hopefully any restaurant like that will be obvious and is not one you would go to.

In summary, sushi is an incredibly healthful food, even with the infinitesimal risk of mercury contamination.
