Question by Nate: Are there any supplements or certain foods vegetarian children need more of?
My children 12, 13, and 15 have been vegetarians nearly 2 years. Their energy levels have been fine, as have their general health. Even though they’re healthy, are there any additional supplements or certain foods that would be beneficial to them? For some reason I forget to bring up the fact that they’re vegs to the doc, even though I worry about vitamin/mineral deficiency. Thanks

They definitely need more protein-rich foods (beans, legumes, nuts) as well as vitamin B.
Give your answer to this question below!

No special food supplements. They serve no purpose. You must know we in India are mostly TOTAL VEGETARIANS.Since generations my family is veg and believe me we all suffer no ill effects. In our family history there has been no serious disease and my ancestors enjoyed a long healthy life.Off course, there has been two instances of heart disease,my father and my maternal grand father. We do not take anything special as supplement. So dont worry, rather you should be happy that our kids are veg and will enjoy a long healthy life for sure.
If you have to take supplements for a diet, then it’s the wrong diet. As long as their diet is balanced, then you don’t need supplements.
If they’re healthy and on a nutritionally balanced diet then there’s no requirement for additional supplements.
It frustrates me when people post answers on here (this is a general observation and not directed at the person posing the question) stating that they have the opinion that vegetarians are missing out on nutrients. However having a slab of meat on the plate does not provide all the nutrients the body needs! The fact is many meat eaters often overlook their diet and don’t look at whether it is nutritionally sound or not. Having discussed this with my midwife recently, her experience is that many women who she deals with who are vegetarian, are more conscious of the foods they eat and are therefore generally healthier than those who aren’t vegetarian.
Your concern is one that any responsible parent should have whether their child is vegetarian or not.
If they’re happy and energetic probably not. The only one that is a slight possibility is vitamin B-12, but in reality humans can get all the nutrients, minerals and vitamins they need with a diverse and plentiful vegetarian diet!
